Two Guitar Greats Commemorate Two Hawai’i Polo Icons
🐎✨🌄✨🐎

We are thrilled to welcome two, world-class musicians to Hawai’i Polo Club this Sunday, August 27 to perform slack-key and Hawaiian steel guitar music in celebration and commemoration of “Mr. Aloha” Clive Ushijima and the Queen of Hawai’i Polo Murph Dailey. Ken Emerson is widely regarded as an acoustic guitar great and is regularly called upon to record and perform with superstars (e.g. the late Gabby Pahinui, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Todd Rundgren, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Boz Scaggs, etc.). Emerson is flying in from the mainland and bringing along his friend Kenneth Makuakāne, an O’ahu cultural leader and 22-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner. Emerson and Makuakāne will perform a full concert starting at approximately 5:30pm.

Adding to the day’s festivities are red-hot equestrian action with polo matches starting at 2pm and broke-da-mouth fare available from 12pm to 6pm including brisket, 5-star chili, kalbi, poke, roast pork sandwiches and cajun burgers from Soul Fusion and The Smoking Boar & The Coconut, plus Uncle’s Ice Cream Sandwiches.

At approximately 5pm, immediately following our final polo match, The Clive Ushijima Cup, auctioneer Surfer Joe Teipel will host a live auction benefiting the inaugural Murph Dailey Youth Polo Scholarship and Hawai’i Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund. Money raised for the polo scholarship will help young O’ahu athletes learn to play polo, funding both: i) equipment purchases supporting Hawai‘i Polo Club’s free youth polo program and ii) travel to the U.S. Polo Association’s annual regional youth tournament on the mainland. 20% of funds raised from the live auction will benefit HCF’s Maui Strong Fund.

Clive Ushijima and Murph Dailey epitomized the aloha spirit, beaming respect, caring and generosity. They helped establish and firmly root Hawai’i Polo Club’s welcoming, joyous culture. Join us this Sunday as we mahalo Clive and Murph and carry their tremendous legacies forward. E Mālama Pono.

CLIVE USHIJIMA CUP

Clive Ushijima with one of his acclaimed saddles

The team that wins our second and final match of the day will hoist the The Clive Ushijima Trophy, an honor worthy of the greatest of celebrations. Hailed as Hawaii Polo’s biggest fan and all-around ambassador of aloha, Uncle Clive established himself as a fixture on our sidelines, setting up a welcome station every week for years, providing staff and players shade and seats, as well as complimentary food & beverages. This tradition of giving became so loved and ingrained that it continues today – carried on by friends and family each Sunday just Kaena Point side of our announcer tower. Ushijima further demonstrated his love of bringing smiles to others through his saddle making – works of art hailed across our state for their beautiful designs and intricate floral inlays. Join us this Sunday 8/27 as we pay tribute to a person whose spirit will forever shine and inspire at Hawai’i Polo Club!

As detailed above, the scholarship will help Hawai’i boys and girls play polo and compete at the annual regional youth polo tournament on the mainland. KEN EMERSON, KENNETH MAKUAKĀNE & FRIENDS

Ken Emerson

We are grateful to wrap festivities on August 27 with a Hawaiian slack-key and lap-steel guitar concert by Ken Emerson, Kenneth Makuakāne & Friends, musical royalty and world-class talents.

Emerson’s records, “Sacred Slack & Steel Guitar” (Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal) and “Slack & Steel” (Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal), are two of our all-time favorite guitar albums. In addition to Makuakāne’s numerous Hawai‘i music awards highlighted above, he has produced major national projects including classic Disney songs “When You Wish Upon A Star” and “Theme From Pocahontas.” He is also one of our favorite humans on the planet.

ABOUT KEN EMERSON

Ken Emerson was born into a musical family with deep connections to Hawai‘i and Hawaiian music which have served as guiding lights throughout Emerson’s life and career. Emerson’s mandolin playing grandfather, Ray Emerson, made Hawai‘i his home in 1917, and Emerson’s grand uncle Ed played jazz saxophone on the famed Matson Liner ‘Malolo’ in the early to mid 1930’s. Emerson’s mother, Alice, was a featured ukulele performer, along with her twin sister Agnes, at the 1939 world’s fair exhibition in San Francisco. The ukulele she played at that venue eventually became Ken’s first ‘guitar’ at age 7.

Additional influences were the jazz, swing, Hawaiian and world music record collection of Emerson’s father and the folk and later rock and blues music scene of 1960’s San Francisco where Emerson grew up and first delved into performing. In 1968, Emerson moved with his family to Hawaiian islands and began his immersion in the culture of Hawai‘i, studying Hawaiian language and music. With help from his father’s 78rpm records, Emerson emulated the players of the 1920’s and ‘30s era, focusing on the steel-guitar, jazz and blues styles of Sol Ho‘opi’i and Sol K. Bright. Soon, Emerson, with his brother Phil (known as The Emerson Brothers), were playing with legendary performers Gabby Pahinui, Genoa Keawe, Raymond Kane, Auntie Alice Namakelua, Sol K. Bright and George Ka‘ainapau, as well as recording and touring with Moe Keale.

Today, Emerson plays both Hawaiian slack-key and lap-steel guitar and has developed unique approaches to both, combining right-hand slack-key technique with left-hand steel-string, slide work (“Slack Steel” as dubbed by Emerson). In concert, Emerson regularly uses the same guitar to play both slack-key and lap-steel (a difficult feat due to slack-key guitar strings being much closer to the guitar neck than typical lap-steel guitars), enabling him to keep audiences’ rapt attention by quickly switching between styles and sounds.

Emerson has received numerous awards during his career including the prestigious Kahili Award for perpetuating Hawaiian culture and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. He also contributed music to the Grammy-Award-Winning album, Slack Key Guitar, Vol. 2.

ABOUT KENNETH MAKUAKĀNE

Kenneth Makuakāne

Kenneth Makuakāne is recognized as the producer of producers of Hawaiian music. He has recorded many groups, including Nā Leo Pilimehana, HAPA, Amy Hānaiali’i Gilliom, Obrian Eselu, Raiatea Helm and the Pandanus Club. To date, Kenneth has produced over two hundred albums, many of which have become successful albums for their record companies.

As a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Makuakāne has been on hundreds of recording projects. He has produced many hallmark albums for the prestigious educational institution Kamehameha Schools; the historical Baibala Hemolele project which created an audio library of the first written document in Hawaiian language back in 1839; and the groundbreaking Disney CD music project where he was chosen to produce the hit Disney classics such as “When You Wish Upon A Star”, “Theme from Pocahontas” and others with a Hawaiian music bed, translated and sung in the Hawaiian language.

A prolific songwriter of over one thousand five hundred songs, Kenneth’s compositions have been recorded by local artists like the Brothers Cazimero, Nā Leo Pilimehana, Kapena, the Pandanus Club, Amy Hānaiali‘i Gilliom, Loyal Garner and Gary Haleamau, as well as international artists from Japan like Yuri Chika and Yuki Miyamae.

His songs have even been performed many times over at the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, Hawai‘i’s Olympics of Hula. His music has been on major films like “Honeymoon In Las Vegas”, “Ka‘iulani” and “Parent Trap In Paradise.”

Kenneth Makuakāne has received more than one hundred and eighty nominations and garnered a total of 22 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, the Hawaii equivalent of the Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year, Song of the Year, Group of the Year, Religious Album of the Year and Hawaiian Album of the Year. Makuakāne is the recent recipient of the prestigious Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts 2015 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Awards.
